Adrian was a young guy. That I once had to test in a woodwork class. He was tenacious and determined. I set up a piece of 2x1" wood in a Mitre saw. Sat him in a chair, and told him to saw through the wood on the flat! I took him around ten minutes to get his hand around the handle of the saw. He did not want to stop for tea breaks or lunch, and it took him the best part of two days to saw through that inch thickness. When he finally made the final saw cut. He whooped. He went bananas. He was so happy. But I had to state negative to using tools. His coordination was not up to such working. I was sad at this, as much as he was.

Another Instructor told me Adrian could not control his electric chair, that he often went to fast in it! Now I knew that Adrian was intelligent. So I made a test. When he was not looking. I would flick the switch to low gear! He became very angry when he found he was taking off slow. I simply watched. He fought to get his hand on that switch and then! Flicked it into high gear and sped off. It became a game between us. So much for not being able to control his chair. Kind of upset the other Instructor. Being proved wrong!

And television. Adrian loved it. He would watch strapped upright into a steel frame. He really was a great guy.

A very touching story, especially when you read deeply into it and realise the word 'was' is used throughout.
